Mountain Walking

Wandering in the Austrian Alps

My wife and I make it a good habit to go mountain walking at least once a year, usually in the Alpbachtal region of Austria.

It is always a good physical challenge, and a chance to look at some of the most beautiful places and natural environments one could possibly wish for.

I find these adventures an incredibly refreshing, strengthening, and inspiring experience.

After going there for many years we have managed to explore a great many of the familiar walking ways, including the gentle - scenic routes, but also some of the more challenging paths.

The image opposite is a picture of me, which was taken by my wife, when we arrived at the Steinberger Joch saddle which is about 1911 meters above sea level.

When not wandering these beautiful landscapes, the surrounding region has many other attractions which include the Hildergard von Bingen Gardens in Reith, the castle ruins and the Augustiner Museum in Rattenberg. Also there is an old palace ( Schloß Matzen ), near Brixlegg, with its fabulous gardens.

If you are a classical music fan, you can find a memorial stone to the composer Hugo Wolf nearby.

There are also a great many events in the area.
Notably, the village of Alpbach, has a superb brass orchestra, the Bundesmusikkapelle Alpbach.

They play an open air free concert near the town church of St.Oswald every friday evening at 8pm. Weather permitting of course.
